What is the Proper Temperature During Winter in Your Home?

check_your_thermostate_480Hands down, one of the most energy efficient moves you can make for your home is to have a programmable thermostat. However, people commonly make the mistake of keeping their indoor temperature at the same level year-round, no matter how hot or cold it is outside.

The truth is that the weather that is going on outside has a great deal to do with how efficiently your heating and cooling systems can work inside. In the interest of saving as much money as possible on your energy bills, make sure that your thermostat is properly set. What is the right temperature? Here is handy guide.

It is 55° F Outside and Rising

When the temperature is creeping up, you may find that you are uncomfortably hot inside. Don’t remedy this by jacking up the A/C. If you set it too low, you run the risk of freezing out your system, which can be costly to repair. Ideally, you should set your thermostat for 72 °F.

When to Open your Windows

Certainly opening your windows when you’ve got your furnace or your air conditioner on is a waste of energy and money. When it’s 55° F outside, it is safe to switch off your air conditioner and open up the windows to let a cooling breeze flow through your home. Any warmer, you may not find this method very effective.

It is 55° F Outside and Falling

When the temperature is on its way down outside, you’ll want to create a cozy atmosphere inside. Turning the thermostat up too high is unnecessary. At the max, your thermostat should be set at 68° F.

If you are still too cold despite this setting, then you have a few options (and none of them are to turn the temperature higher). Make sure that your windows and doors don’t have cracks in the seals. Look for spaces in doorways where warm air might be escaping. Consider applying a window film to keep warm air from escaping through the windows.

Save Money While you Sleep

Don’t turn the furnace off altogether at night, as temperatures outside fluctuate, and you may wake up to an unpleasantly cool home. Set the thermostat for 62° F.
