If water is actively spreading, sewage is backing up, or your home has suddenly lost water, book emergency plumbing and describe what is happening when you request service. If you can safely stop the water first, doing so can limit additional damage.

First: Stop the Water

Take these steps when water is actively leaking into your home:

1. Find the main shut-off valve. If you cannot isolate the leaking fixture or pipe, shut off the home's main water supply. Valve locations vary but check near where the water service enters the property, in the garage, or along an exterior wall.
2. Use a fixture shutoff when possible. Toilets, sinks, and some appliances have local valves that can stop the leak without shutting off water to the entire house.
3. Stay away from electrical hazards. Do not enter standing water near outlets, appliances, electrical panels, or other energized equipment. Shut off electricity only when you can reach the controls without approaching water.
4. Isolate a leaking water heater. If you can safely reach its water supply valve, shut off the incoming water to limit additional leaking.
5. Keep away from sewage. If wastewater is backing up, stop using plumbing fixtures and keep people and pets away from the affected area.

Burst Pipe

A burst pipe can release a large amount of water quickly. Shut off the nearest fixture valve or main water supply when it is safe to do so, then request service. After the immediate problem is repaired, preventing burst pipes starts with addressing exposed piping, pressure problems, and other conditions that contributed to the failure.

Major Water Leak

A major leak needs quick attention when water cannot be contained or isolated. When water is appearing without an obvious source, water leak detection helps locate concealed leaks before unnecessary openings are made in walls or flooring.

Sewage Backup

Stop using toilets, sinks, showers, and appliances that send water into the drainage system when sewage is backing up. Avoid contact with wastewater. A backup affecting several fixtures can point to a blockage or problem in the main line.

No Water

If the entire home suddenly loses water, first check for a known utility interruption if you can do so quickly. If nearby homes have water or you see signs of a leak on your property, the problem may be within your plumbing system.

Gas Smell

Leave the building if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak. Do not operate switches, use flames, or remain inside trying to locate the source. From a safe location, contact your gas utility or emergency authorities for instructions.

Uncontrolled water, sewage entering the home, a suspected gas leak, or a major leak you cannot isolate needs immediate attention.

A slow drain with no backup, an isolated dripping faucet, or a running toilet that can be shut off does not carry the same urgency. Those problems still need repair, but controlling the water can give you time to schedule service without treating every plumbing problem as an emergency.
