Why Is My Faucet Dripping?

Four Causes of a Leaky Faucet

Faucet RepairA leaky faucet can be one of life's greatest annoyances, but generally it is an easily repairable problem. This article will briefly cover the most common causes of a leaking faucet.

1. Something is Broken.

The most likely cause of a leaking faucet is a damaged part, most likely one of the O-rings. O-rings are small, rubber circles that seal off different parts of the piping or faucet. Unfortunately, O-rings are not known for their longevity, and overtime they degrade and break. The result, of course, is that the seal they were creating is suddenly broken, allowing water to leak through in a steady drip.

In more serious cases, it could be a worn out cartridge. The cartridge is the actual valve within the faucet that controls the flow of water. Like any moving part, it can wear out overtime. If it is the cartridge causing the leak, you may need the help of a professional to replace. If you want to give it a shot on your own, make sure you purchase the correct size of cartridge for your faucet.

2. Water Pressure.

Another possible cause of a leaking faucet is irregular water pressure. If the water pressure in your home is too high, it may by causing more pressure than the valves in the faucet can handle. Essentially, water is constantly being forced out of the faucet, resulting in a steady drip.

3. Bad Pipes.

It is not particularly common, but another possible cause of a leaks are broken pipes. This can be more common during the winter months if your house contains old pipes prone to freezing. As ice builds in the pipe, it causes cracks in the piping, disrupting pressure and causing leaks.

Most causes of leaks are simple problems, but if you don't feel comfortable attempting repairs on your own, don't hesitate to contact a plumber. Leaks that are left unattended for too long can result in damages and high water bills. Take care of any leaking faucets as soon as possible.
