Is your home protected with a sump pump? It rarely rains in Las Vegas, but when it does, make sure you and your family are prepared for unexpected flooding. Sump pumps help direct water away from low lying areas of your home, saving you from water damage and mold or mildew growth.
Do You Really Need a Sump Pump?
A sump pump is a preventive device that pumps excess water out of your home. Water can be forced into contact with the walls in the lower parts of your home, where it will squeeze through the cracks that inevitably form.
If your home has not been waterproofed, you will want to consider installing a sump pump. Areas of your home that have not been sealed are more vulnerable to flooding and water damage. The sump pump will draw any excess groundwater away from your home.
What Kinds of Sump Pumps Are Available?
The most common type of sump pump is the permanent pump. This pump is installed along the edges of your space. It draws electricity from the home as a source of power and will be able to ensure that any excess groundwater that accumulates will be diverted away from your home.
Permanent pumps are available as pedestal or submersible units.
Pedestal sump pumps are ideal for smaller sump basins; the pump motor works above the basin, above the water. Submersible sump pumps, on the other hand, are placed underwater.
What if your power goes out?
Another type of sump pump is the battery backup pump. This is designed to kick on should the power go out. It will ensure that, in the case of a heavy rainstorm, your home will not be flooded with water. It will also help the main sump pump out, should the amount of water that has accumulated be too much for it to handle.
A third type of sump pump is the AC inverter backup pump, which will require a generator to continue working if the power goes out. This particular pump is not as efficient as the battery backup pump, but is generally considered to be more reliable.
What Are Common Sump Pump Problems?
You will need to repair your pump if you notice the following issues:
- Frozen discharge pipes
- Faulty, stuck switch
- You have had your sump pump for over 5-7 years
Power failure is another source of sump pump trouble. Sump pumps draw their energy from the electrical grid; if the grid goes out, the pump will not be able to do its job. This is why we recommend adding a battery backup pump in addition to your main pump, to ensure proper protection in case of an emergency.
